Nvidia invests $5 billion in Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence
Nvidia and Safe Superintelligence Inc. announced a long-term strategic partnership on July 27. Nvidia said it had made a substantial investment in the secretive AI lab founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Reuters, citing a person briefed on the deal, put the equity investment at $5 billion. The companies did not disclose that figure in their joint announcement, so it should be treated as independently reported rather than officially confirmed.
SSI will gain access to Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin systems, which the partners say will increase the lab’s computing resources by an order of magnitude. The companies also plan to collaborate on Nvidia’s current and future computing platforms. Nvidia said it entered the partnership after receiving rare access to SSI’s closely guarded research; Sutskever said the lab had reached a point where its work was worth scaling. No model, product or release date was announced.
Founded in 2024, SSI describes itself as a ‘straight-shot’ lab with one goal and one product: safe superintelligence. It is led by Sutskever and Daniel Levy. Sutskever helped create foundational work including AlexNet, sequence-to-sequence learning and GPT models, and later contributed to the research behind OpenAI’s reasoning systems. That history makes SSI unusually influential despite revealing little about its technical approach or progress.
The deal matters because advanced AI increasingly depends on access to scarce computing infrastructure as much as on algorithms and talent. Five billion dollars and a tenfold increase in compute can move SSI into a different competitive tier. Nvidia, meanwhile, gains a close technical relationship with another frontier lab and an early view of workloads that could shape future chips. The arrangement also reinforces a wider market pattern: the dominant supplier of AI accelerators is investing in companies that will become major customers for those accelerators.
AI users and developers should not expect an immediate new service. SSI has not promised a chatbot, API or open model, and the partnership offers no public evidence that superintelligence is near. Its immediate significance is strategic. One of the field’s most closely watched researchers now has far more capital and hardware, while Nvidia deepens its influence over which laboratories can attempt the largest experiments. The next meaningful test will be whether SSI turns that capacity into verifiable research, safety methods or a product—and how much of that work it ultimately shares.
